A trick for remembering hanzi with radicals

Many people look at a Chinese character as a tangle of strokes and try to memorize each one by heart. That approach is both slow and quick to fade.

Radicals are the "genes" of hanzi

Every Chinese character contains at least one radical that hints at its meaning. For example the radical 氵(water) shows up in 河 (river), 海 (sea), 洗 (to wash) — all water-related.

Learn in clusters

Instead of learning characters one by one, group the ones that share a radical:

• Radical 心 (heart): 想 (to think), 忙 (busy), 快 (happy/fast) — all tied to emotion and the mind.
• Radical 木 (tree): 林 (forest), 树 (tree), 椅 (chair) — related to wood and plants.

Tell the character a story

Build a little story linking the components. The character 好 (good) is made of 女 (woman) + 子 (child): "a woman with a child is a good thing". Memories with images and emotion stick around far longer.
