HSK 1
能愿动词:想、要
Modal verbs: 想 and 要
Explanation
想 and 要 are two modal verbs placed before the main verb to express a wish or intention. 想 (xiǎng) is used when you want to do something in a gentler way — it may just be a thought or a not-yet-firm plan, as in '我想学中文' (I want to learn Chinese). 要 (yào) is stronger, expressing determination or a clear plan, for example '他要去书店' (He plans to go to the bookstore). Note: depending on context, 要 can also mean 'need'.
