Xiao Hua hides his bad test score and sits alone out in the yard. His close friend Xiao Fang finds him and stays by his side until it grows dark.
The Paper Turned Over
Class was over, and the teacher handed back the test papers.
Xiao Hua glanced at his score, then quickly flipped the paper over and laid it face down on his desk.
Deskmate
Hey, how many points did you get? Come on, let me see.
Xiao Hua
There's nothing to see. Just leave it alone.
He stuffed the test into his bag and walked out of the classroom alone.
The Steps Behind the School
Xiao Hua sat on the steps behind the sports field, his head down, not wanting to talk.
Xiao Fang had looked for him for ages, and finally spotted him right here.
Xiao Fang
I knew you'd be here. Did you bomb the test?
Xiao Hua
I'm scared my parents will scold me when I get home, and scared the other kids will laugh at me.
Xiao Fang didn't say anything; she just sat down beside him.
Until It Got Dark
Xiao Fang
Take out the test. Let's see where you went wrong.
The two of them went through it question by question, and Xiao Hua slowly explained which parts he hadn't understood.
Xiao Hua
It's actually not as hard as I thought. A moment ago I didn't even dare to look at it.
Xiao Fang
It's getting dark. I'll walk you home. Next time let's study together.
When they reached the school gate, Xiao Hua glanced back at those steps and let out a gentle sigh of relief.
