While hunting for a pen, Xiao Yu pulls out a faded black-and-white photo, and that afternoon Grandma suddenly tells her all about the little house they once called home.
A Pen and a Photo
Xiao Yu was digging around the very bottom of her desk for a pen when her hand bumped into a stiff piece of paper.
Xiao Yu
Grandma, come look! This photo has gone all yellow. Who are these two people in it?
Grandma set down the vegetables she was holding, put on her glasses, and gazed at it for a good while before letting out a laugh.
Grandma
This skinny young man in the white shirt is your grandpa; and the one beside him, that's me.
The Little House of Long Ago
Xiao Yu
Really? Grandpa was so young back then! Where was the photo taken?
Grandma
That little house by the doorway was the home we lived in right after we got married. On rainy days the roof even leaked.
Xiao Yu
It leaked? That must have been so inconvenient! With no computer at night, what did you two even do?
Grandma
We'd carry two chairs out to the doorway, eat watermelon and chat with the neighbors, and before we knew it, it was the middle of the night.
Keeping It Safe
Xiao Yu
The way you tell it, life was hard back then, but it sounds so lively and fun.
Grandma gently wiped the dust off the photo with her hand, her eyes a little red.
Xiao Yu
I'll go get a frame and put it inside, so it won't get damaged anymore.
Grandma
Good girl. When your dad gets home from work, the three of us will take a picture together and hang it right next to this one.
