The Last Two Tickets

Xiao Hong talks Da Wei into seeing the new movie everyone's been raving about. The tickets nearly sell out, the coffee spills, but when the theater lights come back on, the two of them realize the story on the screen is uncannily like their own.

An Afternoon Phone Call

Xiao Hong

wèiwěijīntiānwǎnshàngyǒukōngma

Hey, Da Wei, are you free tonight?

Da Wei

yǒuazěnmeletīngdeshēngyīnhǎoxiànghěnzháo

Yeah, I am. What's up? You sound like you're in a real hurry.

Xiao Hong

jiǎngliǎnglǎopéngyǒudexīndiànyǐngjiādōuzàishuōhǎokànxiǎngkànkàn

That new movie about two old friends — everyone says it's great, and I'd love to go see it.

Da Wei

hǎoaguòzhèmehuǒxiànzàiháimǎidàopiàoma

Sure! But it's so popular — can we even still get tickets?

Xiao Hong

shǒushàngkànlezhīshèngzuìhòuliǎngzhāngleshàngmǎidiǎndeliùdiǎnbàndàodiànyǐngyuàn

I just checked on my phone — there are only two left, so I'm buying them right now! It's the seven o'clock show, so get to the theater by six thirty.

Outside the Theater

liùdiǎnèrshíwěipǎodàodiànyǐngyuànménkǒudeshíhòuxiǎohóngjīngzheliǎngzhāngpiàozàiděngle

At six twenty-five, when Da Wei came rushing up to the theater entrance, Xiao Hong was already waiting, holding up the two tickets.

Da Wei

láidezhēnzǎowéizhènéngxiāndàone

You got here so early! I really thought I'd beat you this time.

Xiao Hong

piàodōuhǎokuàijìnbaāiháimǎilebēifēidiànyǐngcáiliǎngxiǎoshí

I've got the tickets, let's hurry inside. Hey, you bought a coffee? The movie's only two hours.

Da Wei

zuótiānjiābāndàohěnwǎnkànzhekànzhejiùshuìzháole

I worked late last night, so I'm afraid I'll doze off halfway through.

huàháiméishuōwánzhuǎnshēnfēijiùzàileshǒushàngtàngzhíshuǎishǒuxiǎohóngzàipángbiānxiàotíng

Before he could even finish, he turned around and the coffee spilled all over his hand — so hot that he kept shaking it, while Xiao Hong stood there laughing nonstop.

When the Lights Came Back On

dēngliàngláideshíhòuxiǎohóngháizàiyǎnjīngwěijiǎzhuāngméikànjiànzhǐjīnleguò

When the lights came up, Xiao Hong was still wiping her eyes; Da Wei pretended not to notice and quietly handed her a tissue.

Xiao Hong

diànyǐngmenchǎolejiàshíniánméishuōhuàzuìhòuháishìyòuzuòdàolemenrènshikuàishíniánleba

In the movie they had a fight and didn't speak for ten years, but in the end they still sat down together again… We've known each other almost ten years too, haven't we?

Da Wei

shìmazánmenyàoshitiānchǎojiàlebiéxuémenděngshínián

You can say that again. If we ever have a fight someday, let's not be like them and wait ten years.

Xiao Hong

fàngxīnzuìduōshēngwǎnshàngxiàyǒuhǎodiànyǐngháijiàoshàng

Don't worry, I'd stay mad for one evening at most. Next time there's a good movie, I'll call you again.

Da Wei

xíngxiàqǐngzàigěizhǔnbèibāozhǐjīn

Deal — next time it's my treat, and I'll bring you a whole pack of tissues too.
