A self-study roadmap from HSK 1 to 6

Going from zero to HSK 7-9 doesn't need a classroom — just a clear roadmap and 15 minutes a day.

Plenty of people start learning Chinese full of energy but quit after a few weeks. The reason usually isn't that it's hard — it's a missing roadmap and fading motivation. This post lays out the path from HSK 1 all the way to HSK 7-9.

What does HSK measure?

HSK (Hanyu Shuiping Kaoshi) is the international-standard Chinese proficiency exam. The 3.0 standard (2021) splits it into 9 levels:

  • HSK 1-2: basic communication (~1,250 cumulative words)
  • HSK 3-4: independence in daily life and work (~3,200 cumulative words)
  • HSK 5-6: academic reading, newspapers, films without subtitles (~5,400 cumulative words)
  • HSK 7-9: full fluency, academic work and translation (~11,000 cumulative words)

How long should each level take?

With a steady 15-30 minutes a day:

  • HSK 1: 3-4 weeks
  • HSK 2: 1-1.5 months
  • HSK 3: 2-3 months
  • HSK 4: 3-4 months

The single most important thing is consistency. Fifteen minutes every day beats a three-hour cram followed by a week off.

The formula for each session

A balanced session should include: new vocabulary (flashcards), an SRS review of the words you're about to forget, a little grammar, and practice of one skill (listening / speaking / reading). Don't drill isolated words — learn them inside sentences, in context.

Keeping the fire alive

Streaks, a daily XP goal and leaderboards may sound like "gamification", but they tap into exactly the psychology that builds habits. Set small, achievable targets and celebrate every day you finish.
