比较句1

bǐ jiào jù 1

Comparison sentences with 比 and 没有

Explanation

These are two basic comparison patterns: an affirmative 'more than' and a negative 'not as ... as'.

Structure

(1) A + 比 (bǐ) + B + adjective → A exceeds B (我朋友比我高 - my friend is taller than me). (2) A + 没有 (méiyǒu) + B + adjective → A falls short of / does not reach B's level (昨天没有今天热 - yesterday wasn't as hot as today).

When to use

to say A surpasses → use 比; to say A is inferior, 'not as much as' → use 没有. The 没有 sentence is precisely the common way to negate a 比 sentence.

Distinguish

比 and 没有. A比B高 = A is taller than B; A没有B高 = A is not as tall as B (i.e. B is taller). Don't negate a 比 sentence with 不比 as a beginner, because the nuance differs (it carries a sense of rebuttal).

Common mistakes

adding 很/非常 before the adjective (wrong: 比我很高); and remember to use the adjective directly after 没有, do NOT add 了.
