动态助词:了

dòng tài zhù cí : liǎo

Aspect particle: 了

Explanation

The aspect particle (动态助词 dòngtài zhùcí) is a function word (a word with no concrete meaning, only a grammatical role) attached to a verb to show the state/progress of an action. 了 (le) placed right after a verb signals that the action has been completed or has occurred, roughly like the past tense in English.

Structure

Subject (the doer, at the start of the sentence) + verb + 了 + object (the target of the action, e.g. "book" in "buy a book") → 他买了一本书 (he bought a book).

When to use

when saying something has been done, usually with a specific quantity attached (一本, 两个).

Common mistakes

when making a NEGATIVE sentence you must use 没 (méi) before the verb and DROP 了: 他没买书 (one does not say 他没买了书). Many learners overuse 了 for every past sentence, but 了 is only used to emphasize completion, not for habits or lasting states.

Examples

他买了一本书。/他没买书。
mǎileběnshū/méimǎishū

He bought a book. / He did not buy a book.

我写了两个汉字。/我没写汉字。
xiěleliǎnghàn/méixiěhàn

I wrote two Chinese characters. / I did not write Chinese characters.
