语气助词:吧、了、吗、呢
yǔ qì zhù cí : ba 、 liǎo 、 ma 、 ne
Modal particles: 吧, 了, 吗, 呢
Explanation
Mood particles (语气助词 - yǔqì zhùcí) are characters placed at the END of a sentence to express the speaker's attitude or tone, without carrying a concrete meaning. HSK1 includes 吧, 了, 吗, 呢.
sentence + 吧 (ba) → suggestion, proposal, conjecture (我们走吧 - let's go). sentence + 了 (le) → a change of state or 'already' (我累了 - I'm tired now). sentence + 吗 (ma) → turns a declarative sentence (an ordinary statement, not a question) into a yes/no question (她是医生吗?- is she a doctor?). sentence + 呢 (ne) → asking back, asking further, or emphasizing something in progress (他是哪国人呢?/ 我在看书呢 - I'm reading, you know).
invite/guess → 吧; report a new situation → 了; ask 'is it the case or not' → 吗; ask follow-up 'and what about... ' or emphasize → 呢.
when a sentence already has a question word (谁, 什么, 哪), do NOT add 吗 - it is wrong to say 他是哪国人吗. Don't confuse 吗 (yes/no question) with 呢 (follow-up/emphasis).
Examples
