用“呢”构成的省略式疑问句“代词/名词+呢?”提问

yòng “ ne ” gòu chéng de shěng lüè shì yí wèn jù “ dài cí / míng cí + ne ? ” tí wèn

Elliptical questions with '呢': 'pronoun/noun + 呢?'

Explanation

This is a shortened question using the modal particle (a function word placed at the end of a sentence to express attitude or sentence type) '呢' (ne). You just add '呢' after a pronoun or noun to form a short question, without repeating the whole sentence.

Structure

Pronoun/Noun + 呢 (ne)? For example 你呢? nǐ ne? (and you, how about you?), 笔呢? bǐ ne? (and the pen, where is it?). The content of the question is understood implicitly from the preceding sentence.

When to use

when you have already talked about the situation of one person/thing and then want to ask back about ANOTHER person/thing in the same situation. If what was said before was about an action (我去医院), then '你呢?' = 'and you (where are you going)?'; if it was about a location (书在桌子上), then '笔呢?' = 'and the pen (where is it)?'.

Common mistakes

Vietnamese learners often translate it mechanically into a full, wordy sentence; in fact just '你呢?' is enough and natural. Also do not confuse this '呢' (shortened question) with the '呢' placed at the end of a sentence indicating an action in progress (他睡觉呢 - he is sleeping).

Examples

我去医院,你呢?
yuànne

I am going to the hospital, and you?

书在桌子上,笔呢?
shūzàizhuōzishàngne

The book is on the table, and where is the pen?
