比较句3

bǐ jiào jù 3

Comparative sentences with 跟…一样/相同 (the same as)

Explanation

This is a comparative sentence used to say that two things are the SAME. '跟' (gēn) means 'with', and '一样' (yíyàng) and '相同' (xiāngtóng) both mean 'the same'.

Structure

(1) A + 跟 (gēn) + B + 一样/相同 → says A and B are the same: 我的爱好跟姐姐一样 (my hobbies are the same as my sister's). (2) A + 跟 + B + 一样 + adjective → says they are the same in a specific respect: 姐姐跟妹妹一样可爱 (the older sister is as cute as the younger sister).

When to use

when asserting that two people/things are alike, or alike in a certain quality (tall, pretty, cute...). To make it NEGATIVE, add '不' before '一样': 不一样 (bù yíyàng, not the same).

Note

you can replace '跟' with '和' (hé, and), as in 哥哥和弟弟一样高.

Common mistakes

(1) when adding an adjective, the adjective goes AFTER '一样' (一样高 = equally tall); Vietnamese learners often put it in the wrong order (*高一样*). (2) The negative form is 不一样, placing '不' BEFORE '一样', not split up in the wrong place. (3) Do not confuse this sentence (being the same) with the '比' sentence (comparing more or less).
