越来越

yuè lái yuè

The structure '越来越' - more and more

Explanation

越来越 (yuè lái yuè) is a fixed structure meaning 'more and more', describing a degree that gradually increases over time.

Structure

Subject (the person or thing performing the action, at the start of the sentence) + 越来越 yuè lái yuè + adjective / psychological verb.

Example

天气越来越热了 (The weather is getting hotter and hotter).

When to use

When saying a quality or feeling changes in an increasing direction over time: hotter and hotter, more and more fond, more and more beautiful... Usually add 了 le at the end to stress that the change has been and is taking place.

Note

After 越来越 do NOT use a degree adverb such as 很 hěn (very) — you cannot say 越来越很热.

Common mistakes

Vietnamese learners often add 很 hěn after 越来越, or confuse it with 越...越... (a different structure needing two clauses); 越来越 is a single fixed block and cannot be split.

Examples

天气越来越热了。
tiānyuèláiyuèle

The weather is getting hotter and hotter.

我越来越喜欢学习中文。
yuèláiyuèhuanxuézhōngwén
