HSK 2
其他助词:的话、等
qí tā zhù cí : de huà 、 děng
Other particles: 的话 and 等
Explanation
This lesson introduces two particles (function words added to a sentence to express a grammatical meaning, without a separate translatable meaning): '的话' and '等'.
(1) [Condition] + 的话 (de huà), (就)... — '的话' is placed at the END of the condition clause, meaning 'if... then', often used together with '就' in the following clause. (2) A、B、C + 等 (děng) — '等' is placed at the END of a list, meaning 'etc., and so on'.
use '的话' when stating a hypothesis/condition (你来的话 nǐ lái de huà = if you come); use '等' when the list is not exhaustive, with more items not mentioned (酒、水果、牛奶等 = wine, fruit, milk, etc.).
(1) Vietnamese learners often place '的话' at the beginning of the clause out of habit with the word 'if', but '的话' must stand at the END of the condition clause. (2) '等' must be placed after the last item of the list, not in the middle; and do not confuse this particle '等' (děng, etc.) with the verb '等' (to wait).
Examples
If you are going to come, then give me a call and I will go pick you up.
I went to the supermarket and bought many things: wine, fruit, milk, etc.
