“把”字句1:表处置
“ bǎ ” zì jù 1 : biǎo chǔ zhì
The 把 (bǎ) structure expressing disposal
Explanation
The 把-construction (bǎ) is a special sentence type that uses the word 把 to move the object (the target affected by the action) to BEFORE the verb, in order to emphasize the HANDLING / EFFECT on that target and the result that happens to it.
subject + 把 + object + verb + accompanying element (there must be an element after the verb; don't leave the verb bare). Three common forms: (1) ...verb + 在/到 + location (place it onto, bring it to somewhere); (2) ...verb (+给) + object 2 (give something to someone); (3) ...verb + result/directional/state complement (an element after the verb indicating the result, direction, or degree).
when you want to say CLEARLY how the object (usually a definite thing) is handled and what the result is - e.g. put the book ONTO the table, see the friend OFF to the station, wash the hands CLEAN.
unlike an ordinary sentence (subject + verb + object), the 把 sentence moves the object out to before the verb and always has a result-indicating element after it; unlike the 被 (bèi) (passive) construction which expresses the passive, the 把 sentence emphasizes the role of the person ACTIVELY handling things.
leaving the verb standing alone after the object without a complement/result (incorrect "我把书看", correct "我把书看完了"); using 把 with verbs that have no affecting nature such as 喜欢 (to like), 是 (to be), 有 (to have); placing 了 or the negative 没 in the wrong spot (没 is placed BEFORE 把).
