看来
kàn lái
看来 (kàn lái)
Explanation
看来 (kànlái) is an inserted expression used to give a judgment or inference based on what has been seen, heard, or known, meaning 'it seems, it appears, apparently'.
看来 (kànlái) + [a statement/inference clause]. It usually stands at the beginning of the sentence or after the subject.
看来他是个好人 = 'It seems he is a good person'.
When the speaker draws a prediction or conclusion that is not 100% certain, based on evidence or the situation at hand. There is usually accompanying grounds (seeing the clear sky, one guesses it won't rain tomorrow).
看来 kànlái is an inference based on objective grounds; 我看 wǒ kàn ('I think/in my view') emphasizes the speaker's subjective opinion; 好像 hǎoxiàng ('it seems like') leans toward a feeling, with a lower degree of certainty.
Vietnamese learners often place 看来 at the end of the sentence (wrong) — it must stand at the head of the judgment clause. Don't confuse it with the literal meaning 'to look over' of 看 + 来.
