Explanation
'据' (jù) is a preposition (a word placed before a noun to indicate a relation) meaning "according to, based on, on the basis of", used to state the source of the information being given.
据 + information source/basis + ，+ the content of the information. The source is often 专家介绍 (zhuān jiā jiè shào, according to experts), 统计 (tǒng jì, statistics), 说 (shuō, it is said). The phrase 据说 (jù shuō) is a fixed form = "it is said, rumor has it".
used at the beginning of a sentence to show where the following information comes from, carrying an objective, formal tone; often found in journalism, reports, and documents. This usage leans toward written language (rarely used in casual conversation).
forgetting the comma separating the source from the content; or using 据 with a source that is too long/complete like 根据 (gēn jù). Tip: 据 goes with a short source (据说, 据统计), while 根据 goes with a more concrete, complete basis (根据这份报告, based on this report).
