结构助词:所
jié gòu zhù cí : suǒ
Structural particle: 所
Explanation
所 (suǒ) here is a structural particle (a function word added to express a grammatical meaning, with no independent meaning of its own), placed before a verb to turn the verb into an element indicating "the thing that is acted upon by the action".
subject (the doer) + 所 + verb (+ 的) + noun. The phrase 所 + verb + 的 forms an attributive (an element that modifies a noun), for example 你所做的每件事 = every thing that you do. There is also the fixed expression 据我所知 (jù wǒ suǒ zhī) = as far as I know.
used when you want to emphasize the object (the target affected by the action), making the sentence more formal and tight. This carries a written flavor (used in books and documents); dropping 所 still leaves a correct sentence but with a lighter formal nuance: 你做的每件事 is also fine.
beginners often think 所 has a concrete meaning and try to translate it separately — in fact 所 is not translated. In addition, 所 only stands before transitive verbs (verbs that take an object), not before adjectives; and don't forget 的 when this phrase modifies a noun.
