The structure '爱A不A'
Explanation
'爱A不A' is a fixed four-character structure (固定格式 gùdìng géshì – fixed pattern), expressing an attitude of indifference or nonchalance, letting someone do whatever they want, carrying a tone of irritation, sulkiness, or disdain.
爱 (ài – want/like) + A + 不 (bù) + A, where A is the same verb repeated (爱听不听 listen if you want, don't if you don't; 爱理不理 respond if you want, don't if you don't).
when expressing a 'suit yourself, I don't care' attitude toward someone else's action; common in spoken language, with a somewhat reproachful or contemptuous tone.
爱理不理 describes only a half-hearted, indifferent state, while the full pattern 爱A不A is used as a resigned, don't-care remark; do not confuse it with 爱……爱…… (like this and like that).
the two A's must be the same verb; you cannot change them to two different verbs (wrong: 爱听不看). A is usually a monosyllabic verb.
