依 - According to / Going by

Explanation

依 (yī) here is a preposition (a word placed before a noun to indicate a relationship: at, with, for…) meaning "according to, based on, going along with," used to state the basis or opinion that serves as support for something.

Structure

依 (yī) + [person/plan/basis] (+ 看 kàn). Common forms: 依你看 / 依我看 (yī nǐ kàn / yī wǒ kàn) = "in your view / in my view"; 依 + 的 + plan = "do it according to the plan of…".

When to use

when asking for or giving an opinion based on someone's viewpoint (依…看), or when agreeing to do something the way someone wants (就依你). It is a bit more formal and concise than 按照 (ànzhào).

Distinguish

依 and 按 (àn) / 按照 (ànzhào) all mean "according to," but 依 also carries the nuance of "going along with, complying with" someone's wishes; 按照 leans toward following rules and standards.

Common mistakes

writing 依你看 as a wordy phrase like 按照你的看法 when a short form is all that is needed; using 依 for dry "according to regulations/rules" contexts (你 should use 按照).
