Bike No. 0537

A shared bike with a broken pedal is left lying on the pavement, and one woman heading home from work decides not to just step around it like everyone else.

Scene 1: A Bike Blocking the Way

xiàbāngāofēngtiězhànkǒuduīzhepáiluànzāodegòngxiǎngdānchē

It was rush hour, and a messy row of shared bikes was piled up right outside the subway entrance.

One of them had toppled over in the middle of the path, its pedal snapped off, blocking the way in and out.

People frowned and went around it, but no one stopped.

Lin Jing

zhèmedǎngzhedàihuìerzhǔnyǒurénbèibàndǎo

Lying there like that, somebody's bound to trip over it sooner or later.

Scene 2: Struggling Alone

Lin Jing crouched down to lift the bike out of the way, but the handlebars were jammed against the railing.

niángyòushìnònghuàidegānma

Miss, you didn't break it. Why bother with it?

Lin Jing

shǒuzhīláomanuókāizǒngràngrénshuāijiāoqiáng

It's no trouble at all. Better to move it than let someone take a fall.

tāochūshǒuduìzhechēshàngdebiānhàosǎolexià0537

She pulled out her phone and scanned the number on the bike — 0537.

Scene 3: One Phone Call

zàiAppzhǎodàolebàoxiūdekǒupāilezhàopiànchuánshàng

In the app she found the option to report a problem, took a photo, and uploaded it.

Lin Jing

bǎnduànletíngzàitiěkǒutǐngwēixiǎndefánjǐnkuàiláichǔ

The pedal's broken, and it's pretty dangerous sitting right by the subway entrance. Please send someone to deal with it soon.

gāngwánpángbiāndàihóngmàozideshūzǒuleguòlái

Just as she hit send, a middle-aged man in a red cap walked over.

The man in the red cap

shìzhèpiàndewéixiūyuánzhèngchóuzhǎozheshìliàngnezhèbàojiùqīngchǔle

I'm the repairman for this area. I was just worrying about which bike it was — your report cleared that right up.

Scene 4: The Path Clears Again

Together they carried the bike to the curb, and the man swapped out the pedal in no time.

The man in the red cap

chénglezhèxiàyòunéngleduōkuīshùnshǒusǎolexià

There, good as new. Thanks to you taking a second to scan it.

chūkǒuxiàkōnglechūláixíngrénláiláiwǎngwǎngshuíméizàibèibànzhù

The entrance suddenly opened up, people streamed in and out, and no one tripped on anything again.

Lin Jing glanced up at the sky, pulled her coat closed, and drifted slowly into the after-work crowd.
