Basic types of phrase structures

Explanation

These are the five basic types of phrases in Chinese - understanding them helps you combine words into correct phrases before forming sentences.

Structure

(1) Coordinate phrase (联合短语 liánhé duǎnyǔ) - the components are EQUAL, with none modifying another: 北京上海, 我和他. (2) Modifier-head phrase (偏正短语 piānzhèng duǎnyǔ) - a modifying part (attributive - modifying a noun, or adverbial - indicating manner) comes before and modifies the head: 新衣服 (new clothes), 认真学习 (study hard). (3) Verb-object phrase (动宾短语 dòngbīn duǎnyǔ) - verb + object (the target acted upon): 买东西 (buy things). (4) Verb-complement phrase (动补短语 dòngbǔ duǎnyǔ) - verb + complement (the element after the verb stating result/direction/degree): 听清楚 (hear clearly). (5) Subject-predicate phrase (主谓短语 zhǔwèi duǎnyǔ) - has both a subject and a predicate: 教室很大 (the classroom is big).

When to use

Recognizing the phrase type helps you know the word order: the modifier comes before the head, the verb comes before the object, and the complement comes after the verb.

Common mistakes

Vietnamese learners often place the attributive AFTER the noun out of Vietnamese habit (like 'clothes new'), but in Chinese the modifying part always comes BEFORE: 新衣服, not 衣服新 (the phrase 衣服新 instead becomes a subject-predicate phrase with a different meaning).
