其他结构类型1

qí tā jié gòu lèi xíng 1

Other phrase structures, type 1

Explanation

This lesson introduces two common types of phrases: the 的 (de) phrase and the serial-verb phrase (several verbs linked together).

Structure

(1) The 的 phrase: [adjective/verb/pronoun] + 的 de → becomes a noun phrase, e.g. 吃的 chī de (something to eat), 他买的 tā mǎi de (the thing he bought). (2) The serial-verb phrase: Verb 1 (+ object) + Verb 2 (+ object), the verbs performed by the SAME subject (the person or thing performing the action, at the start of the sentence), in sequence or in a purpose relationship, e.g. 坐飞机去北京 (take a plane to go to Beijing).

When to use

Use the 的 phrase to replace a noun that is already clear, so as to avoid repetition (吃的 = something to eat). Use the serial-verb phrase to express a chain of actions or a means + purpose within one sentence.

Common mistakes

Vietnamese learners often forget the 的 de at the end of a 的 phrase (writing 他买 instead of 他买的); and often reverse the order of a serial-verb phrase (the verb indicating means/manner must come first, as in 坐飞机 before 去北京).
