“有”字句2

“ yǒu ” zì jù 2

Sentences with “有” for evaluation or comparison

Explanation

This is the 有 (yǒu) sentence used to EVALUATE or state a degree that something REACHES, usually height, age, length, etc. Here 有 does not mean 'to possess' but 'to reach a level'.

Structure

Subject + 有 + a specific quantity + adjective.

Example

他有一米八高 (He is (reaches) one meter eighty tall); 他有三十多岁 (He is over thirty years old).

When to use

Use it when giving a specific number to evaluate a person's or thing's stature, size, or age. It is also used in comparisons to indicate reaching the same level as something: 有...那么高 (as tall as...).

Common mistakes

Vietnamese learners often drop the adjective at the end, saying only 他有一米八 and forgetting 高. In this evaluative pattern there should be an adjective (高 - tall, 长 - long...) after the number. Don't interpret 有 as 'to possess' here.
