条件复句:只要⋯⋯,就⋯⋯
tiáo jiàn fù jù : zhǐ yào ⋯ ⋯ , jiù ⋯ ⋯
Conditional sentences: As long as..., then...
Explanation
This is the conditional compound sentence (a sentence with two clauses: one stating a condition, one stating the result) with the pair of conjunctions (words that link clauses) 只要 (zhǐyào, as long as)... 就 (jiù, then)... Meaning: as long as ONE minimum condition is met, the result is sure to happen.
只要 + condition, 就 + result. Note that 就 always comes after the subject of the result clause and before the verb: 我就送你 (then I will give you).
Use it when you want to state an easily met condition, one that is enough on its own to produce the result (different from 只有 - only if/must, which states the SOLE necessary condition).
Vietnamese learners often forget 就 in the second clause, or place 就 in the wrong spot. Remember 就 comes right after the subject of the result clause, before the verb. Don't confuse 只要 (as long as - sufficient condition) with 只有 (only if - the sole necessary condition, used with 才).
