假设复句

jiǎ shè fù jù

Conditional sentences (假设复句)

Explanation

This is the hypothetical conditional complex sentence (假设复句 (jiǎshè fùjù)): it states a hypothesis in the first clause, then gives the result in the second clause.

Structure

Method 1 — no conjunction needed, just place the two clauses side by side (明天下雨,我们在家休息 = Tomorrow if it rains, we rest at home). Method 2 — use the conjunction pair 如果 (rúguǒ) …,就 (jiù) … (if…, then…) or …的话 (…de huà),就 (jiù) … (if…, then…).

When to use

When discussing an uncertain possibility and the result that follows. 就 (jiù) in the second clause means "then," linking the result to the condition.

Distinguish

如果 (rúguǒ) is placed at the BEGINNING of the condition clause, whereas 的话 (de huà) is placed at the END of the condition clause; you can use both at once (如果…的话) for emphasis, but usually only one is needed.

Common mistakes

Vietnamese learners often forget 就 (jiù) in the result clause, or place 如果 in the middle/end of the clause — 如果 must stand at the start of the hypothetical clause.
