HSK 2

用“就”表示强调

yòng “ jiù ” biǎo shì qiáng diào

Using "就" for emphasis

Explanation

就 (jiù) here is an adverb (a word that modifies a verb or an adjective) placed before the predicate (the part stating the action or quality of the subject) to EMPHASIZE, to affirm with certainty and precision.

Structure

Subject (the person or thing performing the action, at the start of the sentence) + 就 jiù + 在/是...

Example

教学楼就在前边 (The teaching building is right ahead); 这就是我们的教室 (This is exactly our classroom).

When to use

When you want to affirm decisively 'it's exactly, right at, precisely', often to answer or confirm a piece of information for certainty and closeness.

Distinguish

The 就 jiù of emphasis ('exactly, right') differs from the 就 jiù indicating early timing in another lesson; here 就 comes before 是 shì (be) or 在 zài (be at) to increase the degree of affirmation.

Common mistakes

Vietnamese learners often drop 就 because the sentence is still correct in meaning without it; but without 就 it loses the emphatic nuance of 'it's exactly / right at'. Note that 就 comes BEFORE 是/在, not at the end of the sentence.

Examples
