只有⋯⋯,才⋯⋯
zhǐ yǒu ⋯ ⋯ , cái ⋯ ⋯
The structure 'Only when...then...'
Explanation
The structure 只有⋯⋯,才⋯⋯ (zhǐyǒu…cái…) means "only when... then...", used to state a SINGLE necessary condition that must be met for the result to occur.
只有 (zhǐyǒu) + condition (necessary), + subject + 才 (cái) + result. 只有 (zhǐyǒu) (only, only when) stands before the condition; 才 (cái) (then, only then) stands before the verb in the result clause. For example: 只有多听多说 (only when you listen a lot and speak a lot), 你才能提高中文水平 (only then can you improve your Chinese level).
use it when emphasizing that a condition is the ONLY path leading to the result, with no other way.
才 (cái) (then, only then) emphasizes a difficult condition that must be fully met to be achieved, and does NOT go with 就; unlike 只要…就… (zhǐyào…jiù…) (as long as... then...) which states a sufficient, easier-to-meet condition.
只有努力才成功 (only when you make an effort do you succeed - a necessary condition) and 只要努力就成功 (as long as you make an effort you succeed - lighter).
Vietnamese learners often use 就 (jiù) instead of 才 (cái) after 只有. Remember: 只有 always goes with 才, not with 就. Also, 才 must be placed before the verb in the second clause, not at the end of the sentence.
