自从
zì cóng
The word "自从" – Ever since
Explanation
自从 zìcóng is a preposition (a word placed before a noun to indicate a relationship: at, with, for...) used to mark the starting point in time of an event in the past, equivalent to "since" in English.
自从 zìcóng + point in time/event (past), + (subject) + 就 jiù + result/change. The word 就 jiù (then, right away) usually accompanies the second clause to connect to the result.
use it when you want to state a change lasting from a point in the past up to the present. For example 自从来到中国 - since coming to China (the starting point), 就喜欢上了中国菜 - has come to like Chinese food (an ongoing change).
自从 zìcóng is only used for a point in the PAST, unlike 从 cóng (from), which can also be used for the future (从明天 - from tomorrow). You cannot say 自从明天.
Vietnamese learners often use 自从 for a future point in time, or forget the result clause that follows. 自从 always needs an accompanying change/result and cannot stand alone.
