HSK 4

既然⋯⋯,就⋯⋯

jì rán ⋯ ⋯ , jiù ⋯ ⋯

The structure '既然...就...'

Explanation

既然⋯⋯,就⋯⋯ (jìrán...jiù...) is a correlative conjunction pair (a pair of words connecting clauses of a sentence) forming a cause-and-effect compound sentence (a sentence with two clauses, the first being the reason, the second being the result), close in meaning to "since... then...", "now that... then..." in Vietnamese.

Structure

既然 jìrán + a premise that is already clear/has already happened, 就 jiù + the natural conclusion or action (e.g. 既然下雨了,我们就... = since it is raining, then we...).

When to use

when the reason in the first clause is an obvious fact or is already known/accepted, and you then draw a logical conclusion in the second clause.

Distinguish

既然 and 因为 yīnwèi (because) both give a reason, but 因为 presents a NEWLY introduced cause, whereas 既然 relies on something ALREADY KNOWN to infer a conclusion. Do not mix them up.

Common mistakes

forgetting the word 就 jiù in the second clause (既然 very often pairs with 就); or placing 就 in the wrong spot — 就 must come after the subject of the second clause and before the verb.

Examples

既然这事你已经决定了,我就不说什么了。

Since you have already decided on this matter, then I won't say anything more.

既然外面下雨了,我们就明天再去吧。
