假如⋯⋯,(就)⋯⋯

jiǎ rú ⋯ ⋯ , ( jiù ) ⋯ ⋯

假如 (Suppose/If)..., (then)...

Explanation

This is a hypothetical compound sentence (a sentence with two clauses, the first stating a hypothetical condition and the second stating the result) using 假如 (jiǎrú, "if / supposing").

Structure

假如 (jiǎrú) + hypothetical condition, (就 jiù) + result. The word 就 (jiù, then/right away) in the latter clause can be omitted.

When to use

when positing a situation that could or may happen, then stating the corresponding result; 假如 has a slightly more written tone than 如果.

Distinguish

假如 (jiǎrú) is almost synonymous with 如果 (rúguǒ, if) and 要是 (yàoshi, if), all introducing the conditional clause; the difference is mainly in tone: 假如 is more formal, 要是 more colloquial, 如果 neutral and the most common.

Common mistakes

Vietnamese learners often drop 就 in the result clause or place 就 in the wrong spot; 就 must come AFTER the subject of the latter clause, right before the verb (我就可以... not 就我可以...). Also remember 假如 stands at the head of the conditional clause, not in the result clause.
