在⋯⋯上/下/中
zài ⋯ ⋯ shàng / xià / zhōng
Using 在⋯⋯上/下/中 to indicate location or context
Explanation
The structure 在⋯⋯上/下/中 (zài...shàng/xià/zhōng) is used to state a specific SCOPE, CONTEXT, or CONDITION as a backdrop for the sentence; it usually comes at the start of the sentence as an adverbial (an element indicating circumstance).
在 (zài, at/in) + content + 上 (shàng) / 下 (xià) / 中 (zhōng), + the main part of the sentence.
在⋯⋯上 (shàng) indicates an ASPECT, facet, or matter (在这件事情上 "regarding this matter"); 在⋯⋯下 (xià) indicates a CIRCUMSTANCE or influencing condition (在他的影响下 "under his influence"); 在⋯⋯中 (zhōng) indicates WITHIN a process or the content of something (在这篇课文中 "in this text").
上 emphasizes an aspect/facet, 下 emphasizes an influencing condition, and 中 emphasizes the inside/process. Choosing the wrong ending character changes the meaning, for example 在...帮助下 ("with the help of") but not 在...帮助上.
Vietnamese learners often forget the ending character 上/下/中, writing only 在这件事情 and stopping, which leaves the sentence incomplete and wrong; you must have the full 在 ... + the corresponding ending character. Also do not mix up 下 and 中: use 下 for an influencing condition and 中 for scope/process.
