从⋯⋯来看

cóng ⋯ ⋯ lái kàn

Structure '从⋯⋯来看'

Explanation

从……来看 is a fixed structure (固定格式 gùdìng géshì — a set sentence frame where you simply fill content into the blanks), meaning "looking from... / judging from... then...," used to state a viewpoint or basis for making a comment.

Structure

从 cóng (from) + [angle / basis / evidence] + 来看 láikàn (looking at it, then it seems) + [conclusion, comment]. e.g. 从他的考试成绩来看 = judging from his exam scores... This phrase serves as an adverbial (indicating the basis) placed at the beginning of the sentence.

When to use

When you want to draw a judgment based on a certain basis (data, experience, angle). The part after 来看 is always a clause stating a conclusion. Common in analysis and evaluation, both spoken and written.

Distinguish

从……来看 (looking from a basis to draw a conclusion) is different from 从……来说 (speaking from..., which leans toward stating a scope/aspect of discussion). When citing evidence to make an inference, 来看 is more natural.

Common mistakes

Vietnamese learners often forget the character 来 (writing only 从……看) or place this phrase at the end of the sentence; correctly, it goes at the beginning and the conclusion follows.
