再⋯⋯也⋯⋯

zài ⋯ ⋯ yě ⋯ ⋯

再⋯⋯也⋯⋯ (No matter how... still...)

Explanation

再……也…… (zài……yě……) is a reduced compound sentence (a compound sentence with the conjunctions omitted, the two clauses pushed close together) meaning "No matter how... still...". It emphasizes that no matter how high the degree of the situation, the result after 也 remains unchanged.

Structure

再 (zài = more/however) + adjective / verb (stating a high degree) + 也 (yě = still) + unchanged result. e.g. 再难也要坚持 = no matter how hard, still must persevere. Here 再 does NOT mean "again/more" as usual, but means "however...to whatever extent".

When to use

When you want to affirm determination or an unchanging conclusion regardless of how extreme the condition is.

Distinguish

再……也…… is close in meaning to 即使……也…… (jíshǐ……yě…… = even if...still...), but 再……也…… emphasizes an increasing DEGREE (the more...still...) more strongly.

Common mistakes

Vietnamese learners often understand 再 here as "again/once more" and translate it wrongly; remember that in this pattern 再 means "no matter how", and you must not drop the 也 in the latter clause.
