依照
yī zhào
依照 (yī zhào) - In accordance with, based on
Explanation
依照 (yīzhào) is a preposition (a word placed before a noun to indicate a relationship: according to, in accordance with), used to say that something is done based on an existing standard, rule, or principle.
依照 yīzhào + [standard/rule/method] + (then)... e.g. 依照学校的规定 (in accordance with the school's regulations). The phrase 依照... usually stands at the head of the sentence or before the verb, serving as an adverbial (a component indicating manner) for the whole sentence.
When stating the basis for doing something — a regulation, law, method, or standard. 依照 carries a formal nuance, leaning toward formal/written usage and administrative documents, and is more formal than 按照 (ànzhào), which is used even in everyday speech.
依照 and 按照 are nearly synonymous ("according to"), differing mainly in degree of formality — 依照 is more formal. 根据 (gēnjù, based on) leans toward citing evidence/source, whereas 依照/按照 lean toward following a rule.
Vietnamese learners often use 依照 in everyday speech, where it sounds stiff; in daily conversation you should use 按照. In addition, after 依照 there must be a noun or noun phrase (regulation, method), and you do not place a full clause directly after it.
