一⋯⋯便⋯⋯

yī ⋯ ⋯ biàn ⋯ ⋯

The structure 'as soon as... then...'

Explanation

一…便… yī… biàn… is a pair of connecting words in a compound sentence (a sentence with two or more clauses) expressing that two actions happen one right after the other immediately, equivalent to 'as soon as... (then/already)...' in Vietnamese. 便 biàn here is the formal way of saying 就 jiù (then, right away).

Structure

一 + [action 1],(subject) 便 + [action 2].

When to use

when the second action happens instantly right after the first one is finished; it emphasizes immediacy and a tight sequence. Because it uses 便, the sentence carries a more written flavor compared to using 就.

Common mistakes

using an incomplete pair (having only 一 but forgetting 便/就); or adding 了 le after the first clause (wrong: 一走出了…便…) — after 一, 了 is usually not used; also, do not confuse 便 biàn here with the 便 meaning 'convenient' in 方便 fāngbiàn.
