为了⋯⋯而⋯⋯
wèi le ⋯ ⋯ ér ⋯ ⋯
The structure 'For... and...' (to indicate purpose)
Explanation
This is the fixed structure (固定格式 gù dìng gé shì — a stable sentence pattern that does not change) 为了⋯⋯而⋯⋯ (wèi le... ér...) meaning "in order to... do...", used to state the purpose of an action.
为了 (wèi le) + purpose + 而 (ér) + action. The character 而 (ér) is a formal conjunction (connecting word) linking the purpose with the action. For example: 为了比赛而努力 = work hard for the competition.
Used to emphasize that the action that follows is done intentionally, in order to achieve the purpose stated before. It carries a formal nuance and is often found in written usage. In everyday conversation people may drop 而 and just say 为了... (为了比赛努力).
Dropping the character 而 in formal writing (sounds less tight), or using 而 to link two clauses that have no purpose relationship. Here 而 must be followed by a VERB/action, not a noun.
