关联副词:便
guān lián fù cí : biàn
Adverbial conjunction: 便 (biàn)
Explanation
便 (biàn) here is an adverb (a word that modifies a verb) serving a linking function, meaning "then, right away, immediately", expressing that the second event happens right after the first. This is the formal way of saying 就 (jiù).
一 (yī) + earlier event + 便 (biàn) + later event → "as soon as... (then/right away)...".
一下课便回家 (yí xià kè biàn huí jiā, goes home as soon as class ends).
used in writing or formal speech to emphasize that two events follow one another very quickly. In everyday colloquial speech, people replace it with 就 (jiù).
便 (biàn) and 就 (jiù) mean the same thing, but 便 leans toward written usage while 就 is used both when speaking. In terms of nuance, using 就 is safer in conversation.
Vietnamese learners often forget the 一 (yī) clause in front, writing only "他下课便回家了", which sounds abrupt; the standard structure needs the pair 一...便... Also, 便 must come right before the verb, not at the beginning of the sentence.
