方式副词:不禁、赶忙、亲眼、特地、特意
fāng shì fù cí : bù jīn 、 gǎn máng 、 qīn yǎn 、 tè de 、 tè yì
Adverbs of manner: 不禁, 赶忙, 亲眼, 特地, 特意
Explanation
This is a group of adverbs (words that modify a verb or an adjective) indicating the manner in which an action is carried out, placed immediately before the verb.
subject (the person/thing acting, at the head of the sentence) + adverb + verb. Meaning of each word: 不禁 (bù jīn) = cannot help but, involuntarily (used for emotions that break out beyond one's control); 赶忙 (gǎn máng) = hurriedly, in a rush (emphasizing a quick reaction to an urgent situation); 亲眼 (qīn yǎn) = with one's own eyes, in person (usually goes with 看到/所见); 特地 (tè dì) and 特意 (tè yì) = deliberately, specially doing something on purpose.
不禁 is used when an emotion (recalling, laughing, crying) bursts out on its own; 赶忙 when the action is urgent and hurried; 亲眼 when affirming reliability because one witnessed it oneself; 特地/特意 when someone goes out of their way to do something for another person.
特地 and 特意 are nearly synonymous and are often interchangeable; 特意 leans toward inner intention or personal feeling ("to have the heart to"), while 特地 leans toward the act of taking the trouble to go and do it. 赶忙 (gǎn máng) differs very little from 连忙 (lián máng), both meaning hurriedly.
Vietnamese learners often place these adverbs after the verb (as in Vietnamese "chạy vội"); in Chinese they must come BEFORE the verb: 赶忙出门 and not 出门赶忙. In addition, 不禁 is only used for emotions one cannot suppress, so do not use it for a deliberate action.
