起初⋯⋯ ,⋯⋯ 才⋯⋯
qǐ chū ⋯ ⋯ , ⋯ ⋯ cái ⋯ ⋯
At first... only later... did...
Explanation
起初⋯⋯,⋯⋯才⋯⋯ (qǐchū... cái...) is a sequential compound-sentence structure (a sentence with several linked clauses) expressing: at first one way, and only later (through a process or thanks to a condition) does something happen/change.
起初 (qǐchū, at first) + the initial state, (后来/经过... later/after going through...) + 才 (cái, only then) + the later result.
when recounting a development that changes over time, emphasizing that the result comes late or requires a condition to be achieved; used in both spoken and written narration.
才 here emphasizes "only lately/belatedly" (as opposed to 就, jiù, which emphasizes "already/early"); if you replace 才 with 就, the sense of "delay" disappears.
dropping 才 in the latter clause loses the nuance of "only after a while"; using 起初 without a contrasting "later" marker in the latter clause makes the time axis unclear.
