⋯⋯,进而⋯⋯
⋯ ⋯ , jìn ér ⋯ ⋯
Using '进而' to indicate a subsequent action of higher degree
Explanation
进而 (jìn'ér) is a conjunction (a word linking clauses) used in progressive compound sentences (sentences with multiple clauses where the later clause is stronger/deeper than the earlier one), meaning 'and then, going a step further'.
(do/achieve step 1), 进而 (jìn'ér) + (go on to do step 2 at a higher level). The latter clause is an elevated result that develops naturally from the former.
when two actions have a relationship of 'the earlier step lays the groundwork, the later step advances further' (challenge → overcome). It has a formal/written flavor, often seen in argumentative writing.
进而 (jìn'ér) stresses 'advancing a step further on the basis of the previous step'; whereas 从而 (cóng'ér, thereby) stresses a cause-effect relationship; 进而 leans toward 'an upward progression', 从而 toward 'a consequent result'.
using 进而 when the two clauses have no progressive relationship (merely parallel) — in that case one must use 并且 (bìngqiě); and confusing 进而 with 从而 when the meaning is 'thereby'.
