HSK 7

而已

而已 (éryǐ) - Only... that's all

Explanation

'而已' is used at the end of a sentence to emphasize that the matter, action or object mentioned is only of such degree, nature or quantity, no more. It often goes with '只 (zhǐ)', '不过 (bùguò)' or '无非 (wúfēi)' to strengthen the tone of downplaying or making light of the matter. In the example '只是一堆纸而已', it emphasizes 'it's just a pile of paper, nothing more'. Similarly, '随便问问而已' means 'just asking casually, that's all', with no deeper intent.

Examples

这算什么,只是一堆纸而已。
