Explanation
频频 (pín pín) is an adverb (a word that modifies a verb) of frequency, describing an action that is repeated many times continuously and in rapid succession.
subject + 频频 (pín pín) + verb (such as 点头 diǎntóu 'nod', 举杯 jǔ bēi 'raise a glass', 打招呼 dǎ zhāohu 'greet').
used when you want to emphasize that an action occurs one after another within a short span of time; it carries a formal/written flavor (used in books and documents) and is more formal than 常常 (chángcháng 'often').
常常 (chángcháng) refers to an action repeated sporadically over many occasions/days; whereas 频频 (pín pín) stresses the rapid, continuous succession within a single situation or a concentrated period of time.
频频 (pín pín) goes with verbs denoting repeatable actions, and is not used with prolonged states (one does not say '频频知道'); nor is it used for something that happens only once.
