Explanation
'即' (jí) is an adverb (a word that modifies a verb) meaning 'immediately, at once', placed before a verb to indicate that an action occurs instantly or as soon as a condition is met. This is a usage with a strong written flavor (usage found in books, rarely used in speech).
condition/situation + 即 (jí) + verb (有错即改 = if there is a fault, correct it at once; 张口即来 = as soon as one opens one's mouth it comes right out).
written language, slogans, four-character idioms, formal contexts requiring conciseness; it emphasizes speed and no hesitation.
'即' (written) is equivalent to the colloquial '就' (jiù), but '即' is more concise and formal, and often combines into fixed phrases such as 立即 (lìjí = immediately), 随即 (suíjí = right afterward).
'即' only stands before a verb, never alone at the end of a sentence; and don't replace '就' with '即' in everyday speech because it sounds too stiff.
