Grammar

Affirmative sentences with 'to be'

S + 是 + 人/事物

Use '是' to say 'S is who / is what'. 爸爸 is dad, 妈妈 is mom, 中国人 is a Chinese person.

他是中国人。

shìzhōngguórén

He is Chinese.

这是我爸爸。

zhèshìba

This is my dad.

Doing something somewhere

S + 在 + 地点 + 动词

'在' goes before a place to say where you are and what you're doing. 家 is home, 中国 is China.

我在家吃米饭。

zàijiāchīfàn

I eat rice at home.

妈妈在中国学习汉语。

mazàizhōngguóxuéhàn

My mom studies Chinese in China.

Declarative sentences

S + V + O。(câu trần thuật)

A declarative sentence states a fact, ending with a full stop and a falling intonation. The order is Subject–Verb–Object; negate with 不 or 没 before the verb, and never add the question particle 吗.

我叫小林。
