结果补语2:动词+到/住/走

jié guǒ bǔ yǔ 2 : dòng cí + dào / zhù / zǒu

Resultative complement 2: Verb + 到/住/走

Explanation

This is a resultative complement (an element after the verb that indicates the result of the action), placed right after the verb to state what result the action achieves. This group includes 到 (dào, reach/attain), 住 (zhù, hold firmly), 走 (zǒu, away/off).

Structure

Subject + verb + 到/住/走 + (了/object). Negative: Subject + 没 (méi) + verb + 到/住/走.

When to use

到 emphasizes attaining / obtaining a result, as in 买到 (managed to buy), 找到 (managed to find); 住 emphasizes holding firmly, fixing in place, as in 接住 (caught/held), 记住 (memorized firmly); 走 emphasizes leaving, being taken away, as in 取走 (took away), 拿走 (carried off).

Distinguish

买 (to buy) only states the action, while 买到 confirms that the buying SUCCEEDED; 接 (to catch/receive) is only the motion, while 接住 means having actually held it.

Common mistakes

the negative must use 没 (not 不), e.g. 没接住 (did not catch), not 不接住. Do not insert other words between the verb and the resultative complement — they are tightly bound together.
