作为 (zuòwéi) is used to state the role, capacity, or identity of someone/something in a situation, equivalent to "in the capacity of", "as" in Vietnamese.

Structure

作为 zuòwéi + noun indicating role/capacity, + main clause (e.g. 作为学生,你应该... = As a student, you should...). The part after 作为 is the role, and the main part states what needs to be done or the responsibility tied to that role.

When to use

when you want to emphasize that an action, duty, or judgment stems from a specific role/identity (as a student, as a teacher, as a friend, as a Vietnamese person...).

Common mistakes

Vietnamese learners often confuse 作为 with 因为 yīnwèi (because); 作为 states "capacity" rather than "cause". Do not add a redundant 是 shì (to be) after 作为.
