鉴于⋯⋯ ,⋯⋯

jiàn yú ⋯ ⋯ , ⋯ ⋯

鉴于⋯⋯ (In view of/Given that…, so…)

Explanation

鉴于⋯⋯,⋯⋯ (jiànyú...) is a causal compound-sentence structure (stating a reason then a result) used to state grounds or reasons in a formal way, meaning "in view of..., therefore...".

Structure

鉴于 (jiànyú) + the situation/reason serving as grounds, (the agent) + the corresponding decision/action.

When to use

in administrative documents, official letters, reports, announcements, and formal correspondence; to state the basis for making a decision.

Distinguish

鉴于 is formal and usually leads to a decision/measure; whereas 由于 (yóuyú, because of) indicates causation in a general, more neutral way and can be used widely, including in everyday speech.

Common mistakes

using 鉴于 in everyday conversation makes the sentence too stiff; placing 鉴于 in the latter clause (wrong — it must open the sentence, stating the reason first and the result after); making the latter clause something other than a decision/measure, which strips the structure of its "grounds for action" character.
