Expressing an Action in Progress

S + 在/正在 + 动词 + 宾语

在 or 正在 is placed before the verb to indicate an action happening at the moment of speaking. 在 is more common in spoken language.

他在办公室打电话。

zàibàngōngshìdiànhuà

He is making a phone call in the office.

我正在准备工作。

zhèngzàizhǔnbèigōngzuò

I am preparing for work.

About to Finish Something

S + 快 + 动词 + 完 + 了

This pattern expresses an action that is about to be completed. 快 and 完 combine with 了 at the end of the sentence to emphasize that something is almost finished.

我的工作快完成了。

degōngzuòkuàiwánchéngle

My work is almost finished.

我快打完电话了。

kuàiwándiànhuàle

I'm about to finish the phone call.
