Grammar

Liking or wanting to do something (talking about hobbies or intentions)

S + 喜欢 / 要 + 动词

This sentence pattern uses 喜欢 (to like) or 要 (to want) before a verb to express liking or wanting to do that action. This structure is very common and simple in everyday conversation.

我喜欢听音乐和看电影。

huantīngyīnyuèkàndiànyǐng

I like listening to music and watching movies.

明天我要去打篮球。

míngtiānyàolánqiú

Tomorrow I want to go play basketball.

Doing something for a little while

V + 一下

Add 一下 after a verb to show that the action happens for a short time, not too long, or as a quick try. This way of speaking makes the sentence softer and more polite.

我累了,想休息一下。

lèilexiǎngxiūxixià

I'm tired, I want to rest for a little while.

请你帮我找一下我的书。

qǐngbāngzhǎoxiàdeshū

Please help me find my book for a moment.
